High School Diploma or GED

To become a licensed real estate agent, most states in the US require you to have at least a high school diploma or its equivalent, the General Educational Diploma (GED). This basic educational requirement ensures that real estate agents have a foundational level of knowledge and skills.

Having a high school diploma or GED shows that you've completed a standard level of education. This educational background helps you prepare for the professional training and exams you'll need to take to become a licensed real estate agent.

It's important to note that age requirements also play a role. In most states, you need to be at least 18 years old to apply for a real estate license. However, some states set the minimum age at 21. This age requirement is in place to ensure that agents have a certain level of maturity and life experience before entering the profession.

Real Estate Salesperson Pre-Licensing Education

Every state in the US requires you to complete certain credit hours of pre-licensing education and pass an exam before you get a real estate license. For instance, in Georgia, to become a real estate salesperson, you must complete a 75-hour pre-license exam prep course before you take the state real estate exam.

The purpose of real estate pre-licensing courses is to help understand the key real estate concepts along with state laws and regulations that one must know to practice real estate. In addition, pre-license courses provide you with knowledge about how to pass the official state real estate exam.

You need to get enrolled in an accredited real estate school to get the pre-licensing education. However, you have the option to either take course classes in-person or online, whichever is convenient for you.

Getting a real estate license doesn’t mean that you can work as a real estate agent for your entire life. In fact, you need to renew your real estate salesperson license after every few years, for which you need to complete continuing education (CE) courses.

So, for instance, if you are in South Carolina, you must complete the 10-hour continuing education course to continue working as a real estate salesperson.
