Your Path to Becoming a Licensed Agent
Follow these 5 simple steps to start your real estate career in Maryland
Complete 60 hours of approved Pre-Licensing education.
To start, you need to successfully complete an approved 60 clock-hour Pre-Licensing salesperson course.For licensed attorneys, those that have received a degree from a university with a major course of study in real estate, or those with a current license in another jurisdiction seeking licensure in Maryland, please see the Maryland Real Estate Commission for detailed education and examination requirements for each candidate’s situation.
Pass the course final exam in the presence of a proctor.
After you complete all course materials and meet the minimum time requirements, you must pass a course final exam. This exam consists of 110 questions and the minimum passing score is 70%. You must take this final exam in the presence of a proctor, and you’ll need to schedule an appointment with a proctor in advance.
Pass the Maryland Real Estate Salesperson Examination.
Within one year of completing your 60-hour Pre-Licensing course, you must take and pass both portions of the Maryland salesperson licensing exam. The National portion of this exam consists of 80 questions and a 90-minute time allowance. The State portion consists of 30 questions and a 30-minute time allowance.
Choose a Sponsoring Broker.
As you go through the process of earning your license, you’ll need to be affiliated with a Broker so you can practice when licensed. Choosing the right Broker is a key factor in becoming a successful Maryland real estate agent, which is why it is important to have the right fit You will have 150 minutes to complete the national portion and 90 minutes for the state portion You will be given 240 minutes to complete the entire exam, 150 minutes for 80 general questions and 90 minutes for 50 state-specific questions.
Complete the online application.
Once you passed your licensing exam and have a sponsoring broker, you will officially apply for your Maryland real estate salesperson license with the Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation.
